The Department undertakes research projects that transcend science, seeking to develop principles of equipment design, as well as equipment required for socially evaluating and resolving problems that must be tackled by modern society in a variety of fields, such as the environment, energy, medical welfare, robots and humanoids, space development, and community building. The objective is to extend education beyond the technology needed for building things to the development of human resources with the capability of undertaking and coordinating the development of devices from the perspective of consumers.
The nucleus of such education is comprised of world-class research that goes beyond Departmental studies through ORT (On-site Research Training) at project laboratories and research centers (including the Waseda Research Institute for Science and Engineering and Environmental Research Institute) and satellite laboratories (at Honj?-Waseda, Kitakyushu City, and Gifu prefecture).
